Favorite Character / blog 37

My favorite character in the musical Once On This Island are the peasant couple. Even if they are poor, they still raised little Ti Moune up and fed her to keep her alive. Unlike Daniel, the peasant couple really cared and loved Ti Moune and treated her very nicely. Their personalities had deeply affected her, which made her a positive and enthusiastic person who would save a strangers life and even trade her life for him no matter what could happen on her. They had also gave her a normal environment during her childhood, which made her more diligent and less pride like the rich. When Ti Moune wanted to heal Daniel, her  "father" went on a journey to help her find out where he comes from, even if the journey is very harsh. They would do anything for Ti Moune due to their love to her, and whenever Ti Moune needs them, they would always be there for her. They are backing up Ti Moune's dream and doing whatever they can to make Ti Moune live better, which makes me think that they are the only positive characters in this musical.

Review of the musical / blog 36

“The musical Once On This Island is based on the novel My Love, My Love, or the Peasant Girl by Rosa Guy, a Caribbean retelling of the folk tale “The Little Mermaid” by Hans Christian Andersen”(Director’s Note). This musical was directed by Ms. Guarnio, and was presented on this weekend by the fantastic performers.
On this island, people were separated by their social classes—peasants and the rich people. They were like two different worlds that never met each other. The protagonist of this musical is a peasant girl called Ti Moune, who was favored by the gods that were in the island’s tale. Ti Moune was found and raised up by an old peasant couple in the tree when she was little; she always wanted to have a better life as a peasant, so the god created an accident and let her met the rich family’s son—Daniel. Ti Moune decided to save his life even if it was against the wish of everyone else around her, and once Daniel woke up, he was impressed by Ti Moune’s beauty and they fell in love with each other. Unfortunately, even if they love each other, they could not marry each other because of the different social class they were in. Ti Moune died after two weeks of waiting outside the gate of the rich’s house and Daniel’s wedding with another descendant of the rich. She became a tree standing outside the house of the rich after her death, watching Daniel’s family’s life.
The story was pretty sad, where Ti Moune loved Daniel but Daniel did not love her as much. The actors had really put themselves into the characters, and showed the characteristics and personalities of their characters. Since it is a musical, they need to exaggerate their body language and facial languages to enforce the emotions and feelings, and to make the audiences understand what is happening easier. It is clearly to see that the troupe had put in great efforts on the settings and the props; the background of the stage was painted really well, with the comparison between the rich and poor part of the island very clear. The four stairs for the four gods were set up nicely for the audiences to recognize easier. And even the clothing of the peasants and rich were obviously differentiated; the rich were wearing all white, while the poor peasants were wearing colorfully.

Fairy tales usually have a good ending of people marrying and having a happy-ever-after life, but in this case, I don’t think that Ti Moune would be happy if she married Daniel. According to the performance of the musical, Daniel is a coward that lacks ability and responsibility to marry Ti Moune. He could not deny the request from his parents for him to marry his rich fiancĂ©, and he didn’t even try to do so. When he knew that it is impossible for him to marry Ti Moune, he immediately abandoned her and thrown her out of his house. If he really loves Timoune, he should be feeling thankful and be responsible for her life, but he wasn’t. I think he doesn’t worth Ti Moune’s love and life, because he was just playing with her love but did not want to do anything for her.

Writing Center Visit / Blog 35

I went to the writing center this Thursday, and had Ms. Swift read through my paper. I had a goal of what to change before going there, that was to have someone revise my second body paragraph about the film that I am writing on. This problem had been confusing me for so long, because I could not decide what to delete, and it is hard for me to delete the masterpiece (in my opinion) that I wrote. I am pretty satisfied with all the other paragraphs, because I had been revising these for a long time and they are pretty much in shape. I think that it would be better if I could have someone read it and give me advises because sometimes it is kind of difficult to find mistakes by myself.

Ms. Swift told us how should the structure of a paper like this be, and told us the importance of each part and how they can be improved. She mentioned that the name of the novel should be underlined and not italicized, the name of the film should be italicized, and these should both have the author/director’s name following. I am basically working on my second body paragraph about how Edmund had change before and after he met Aslan. In my opinion, this paragraph is too wordy, which could make the readers get bored, so Ms. Swift gave me suggestions about how to delete the things that are not necessarily needed in the paragraph. She asked me to delete whatever I think that is not really closely related to the thesis or the topic sentence, and add more analysis of how Edmund changed overtime and the reason why he changed. In my second body paragraph, there was a lot of wordy description about how Edmund was, such as how bad he used to behave and what he used to believe in, but there wasn’t a lot of description about how he changed and why he changed after. At first I found the suggestion not extremely useful, because it was basically like she said nothing; everybody knows that I have to delete the abundant fact and add more analysis. But then I realized that it is not useless at all, because it is the standard to check if any word, phrase or sentence is not necessarily needed.

I found the suggestion from Ms. Swift very useful, it helps me to improve one of my very important body paragraphs, and made my paper much better. I don’t suggest having going to the writing center as an assignment, because there are a lot of us, and it is hard for Ms. Swift to read through everyone’s paper in a small amount of time and give very specific corrections/suggestions to all of us. I think it is also not the most efficient way to make our papers better, and maybe we could do some more peer reviews and I found it very useful; it tells us where specifically we should be improving on, and how you could improve that.

Reflection on revised draft / blog 34

Read over your draft. Make any grammar corrections that you notice right on the draft itself. Then post on your blog the following reflection: Where are you with your essay? What did you change in the revision and how did it turn out? What else do you need to work on? What do you think your strnegths and weaknesses are? What has been difficult and what has been easy? What have you improved on in your writing so far. 300-500 words

I am almost done with my essay after these past few weeks of writing and revising. I added a quote in the second body paragraph to show how sarcastic and acerb Edmund was, which emphasized the argument that Edmund lacked attention from others because it doesnot tell us in the movie; I had also added more analysis of how Edmund had changed after he established a friendship with Aslan. Edmund is a very interesting character, he is a very intertwined person about what he should do in his daily life, so I added a lot of details of the reason why he behaved like a betrayer. It turns out to make the second body paragraph very detailed about Edmund's analysis before the change that occurred after, makes the reader understand him more, but it had also made this paragraph very wordy and lack of analysis after the change. I think I would delete some of the summaries before Edmund's change because it makes the paragraph wordy and could make the readers lose their interest to read. As the result, I was basically making changes on my second body paragraph where it demonstrates the way Edmund behaves before and after establishing a relationship with Aslan. I had also changed the tense of the body paragraphs to past tense which helps the paper to make more sense. I think I still need to work on the second and third body paragraphs; I am going to add more details and information about how Edmund changed after he met Aslan and how he behaves afterwards. My strength is my introduction, my thesis and the first body paragraph, because it had been revised my many of my classmates and I spent most of my time on this body paragraph. My weakness is the second body paragraph because it sounds a bit wordy and boring, and the facts and analysis is unbalanced now. I would spend more time revising it and go to the writing center to have Ms Wendy look over it. Writing the summary of the stories is easy because it requires no thinking but only paraphrasing. Writing the analysis is much harder because it is not mentioned in the book or movie, and we have to really consider about the reason why something turned out to be what had happened. I had a lot of improvements during these few weeks; I corrected my tenses, added more analysis to the second paragraph, had an organized structure of my paper, and had written an analytical intro and an analytical ending paragraph. I think I need to work on my body paragraph to make them more clear and analytical.

The Magic To Change

What can a friendship bring to people?A strong and intense friendship can usually improve a person from a lot of aspects, his personality, his habits and even his principles; it is clearly shown in the novel Me And You and the movie The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. In the novel Me And You, Lorenzo was an antisocial boy who did not have any relationship with people other than his parents or grandma; but after he met Olivia, who is his half sister, her sickness because addiction to drugs had aroused Lorenzo's sympathy and hopes to be a more optimistic person. Similar to Lorenzo, Edmund is also one of the main character in the movie The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe; he had changed from a selfish and improvident boy that only cared about his own benefit to a real strong and sagacious emperor of Narnia after Aslan, the true king of Narnia sacrificed himself for saving Edmund's life and establishing a true deep friendship with him. These two stories tell us that a true relationship with others is very precious; no matter what kind of person or race he is, they could still change you slightly and eventually through love and friendship.

Lorenzo, the protagonist in the novel Me And You, is a teenage boy who changed from an introversive kid who doesn't care about anyone to a boy who has love, hope and determination after establishing a relationship with Olivia, his half sister. It shows how an intense relationship can give a person hope and change his personality entirely. In this novel, Lorenzo was a kid with some mental disorders. He did not care about anyone else instead of his parents and his grandma, and didn't know how to make friends. Even though he was very smart, he still couldn't handle his emotion especially his rage. He pretended to be a wasp that "had managed to trick them all, integrating perfectly with the waspian society"(Ammaniti 37) in his school in order to make his mother satisfy about him making friends. After he met Olivia, his half sister and spent the whole week with her in the basement, a huge change had occurred on him. It says in the book that after he saw Olivia feeling very suffering, he "hugged her and leaned [his] forehead against her neck, [his] nose on her collarbone, and [he] burst into tears"(Ammaniti 110). This is the first time of him thinking and caring about someone who is not his parents or grandma. He starts to care for others that are not related to him, and he wants to help others. On the last day of the ski week when he and Olivia spend their time in the basement, Lorenzo had promised her that they would keep in touch and see each other again in the future. He says that this is the first time he had ever felt alive in his entire life, and I think it is because Olivia's arrival had given him hope to make friends and improve himself in different ways. The intense relationship established between Olivia and Lorenzo had changed Lorenzo positively; it changed his personality from introversive to out going, and gave him hope and goals to make friends and live a better life.

Similar to Me And You, the movie the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe shows how an intense friendship can change someone's personality and make him mature; just like Edmund in the movie, who changed from a selfish, cowardly and childish betrayer to a strong leader who cares about others after establishing an intense friendship with Aslan, the true king of Narnia. Edmund was a kid who lacks attention from others and sometimes feeling ignored; he laughed at Lucy when she said there's a world in the wardrobe, "[mocking Lucy] Find any new countries in the cupboard?"(The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe) He tried to say things sarcastically for gaining attention from the others all the time, but it did not seem to be working. After the four siblings realized that Narnia does exist, Edmund decided to believe the queen that he met on his own and bring his siblings to the castle. He thought that the queen would treat his family members as nice as how she treated him, and then they would pay their attention on him which makes him feel not ignored. But his thoughts were too naive; after he went back to the castle, he was then imprisoned by the queen because instead of not bringing his siblings here, he brought a news that the last king Aslan was back. For saving Edmund from the witch(queen), Aslan sacrificed his life and rescued Edmund, which made Edmund feel really ashamed. It is the first time that Edmund had been paying attention to, and the price of it is so expensive that he couldn't even afford; tolerance and honest had secretly grown in his heart after Aslan's death. When Aslan came alive, he met Edmund and became very good friends with him, which encourages Edmund to be braver and eventually made him an excellent fighter and leader. He gave Edmund the feeling of being cared and attached importance to, which makes Edmund less sarcastic and acerb. Because of Edmund's change, they won the battle with the witch, which enclosed all of the sibling's relationship and made Edmund more confident. The change that occurred on Edmund was all made by Aslan; he gave him the feeling of being an important person to others, which changed Edmund from an acerb and childish boy to a tolerant and mature man.

The two stories are pretty similar that the two characters both changed and improved their personalities after established an intense relationship with the others, but they are different because in Me And You, Olivia is a pretty negative person and in Narnia, while Aslan is a really positive character. Lorenzo changed because his sympathy to his sister's symptoms had aroused, because he didn't want to see his sister in pain after the few days that they had been together. The fact of Olivia's suffering had either brought Lorenzo suffer too; it is very hard for him to see someone in pain and not helping her because of the special relationship they had. Edmund had a great change in behaviors and thoughts because of the appearing of Aslan; he is the first one to give Edmund attention and the feeling of being important, which made Edmund less sarcastic or acerb and became a more mature man eventually. The changes that occurred on Lorenzo and Edmund are all caused by the intense relationship; even if they are in different ways, they still changed the person involved positively and improved them in their personality.

No matter how the person that has a relationship with you is, he/she could truly change your personality and make you a better person. Olivia was definitely not a positive person to the majority of society, but throughout the relationship with Lorenzo, she helped him to find his hopes, goals, wishes, and his optimistic sides that improves his thoughts, personality and behavior. Even though Aslan is not a person, the friendship established between him and Edmund had also deeply changed Edmund's thoughts and ways of facing problems and different situations. An intense relationship can be established between anyone; it is what people use to expel sadness, loneliness and even pessimism.

My favorite sentence in my first draft is "An intense relationship can be established between anyone; it is what people use to expel sadness, loneliness and even pessimism." It concludes the whole paper, and extends the concept of how relationship could help people. It tells the readers that an intense relationship with others, no matter how the person is, can bring people hopes and get rid of the bad feelings; it is beneficial for people to make new friends because this is an efficient way to expel boredom and loneliness, which could make people feel sad about.

Snowday poem / blog 29

In the freezing season of the year
When everybody was hung by a scarf gently,
When everywhere was painted white silently,
When every drop water was frozen into ice and snow flakes quietly,
I got a message from my school
That I had been anticipating for so long, in every morning when I have my dropping drools.

It says,
Good Morning.
Cheshire Academy will cancel all classes and activities Today, Friday February 5.
Thank you.
Okay school no problem, no need to thank me,
I would love to do this favor everyday in my life.

Thesis and Outline / blog 28

Thesis:
The movie the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe tells about how an intense friendship can change someone's personality and make him mature; just like Edmund in the movie, who changed from a selfish, cowardly and childish betrayer to a strong leader who cares about others after establishing an intense friendship with Aslan, the true king of Narnia.

Outline:
A strong and intense relationship can change someone's personality entirely.
The novel Me And You shows about how a positive relationship can give a person hope and change his personality entirely; just like Lorenzo in the book, who changed from an introversive kid who doesn't care about anyone to a boy who has love, hope and determination after establishing a relationship with Olivia, his half sister. In Me And You, Lorenzo was a kid with some mental disorders. He did not care about anyone else instead of his parents and his grandma, and didn't know how to make friends. Even though he was very smart, he still couldn't handle his emotion especially his rage. After he met Olivia, his half sister and spent the whole week with her in the basement, a huge change had occurred on him. He started caring for others that are not related to him, and he wanted to help others. Olivia's come had given him hope to make friends and improve himself in different ways. Edmund was a kid who lacks attention from others and sometimes feeling ignored; for gaining attentions from the others, he decided to believe the queen and bring his siblings to the castle. He thought that the queen would treat his family members as nice as how she treated him, and then they would pay their attention on him which makes him feel not ignored. He then was imprisoned by the queen because instead of not bringing his siblings here, he brought a news that the last king Aslan was back. They won the battle with the witch, which enclosed their relationship and made Edmund more confident. The two stories are pretty similar that the two characters both changed and improved their personalities after established an intense relationship with the others, but they are different because in Me And You, Olivia is a pretty negative person and in Narnia, Aslan is a really positive character. The first one changed Lorenzo's personality because of his pity to his sister and wanting both of them to become better, and the second one changed Edmund because of his shame to his peers and the desire to be as shiny as them.
No matter how the person that has a relationship with you is, he/she could truly change your personality and make you a better person.

During WWII, kids were all evacuated to rural areas for avoiding the air bombs. The four kids in the Pevensie family, Lucy, Edmund, Peter and Susan were also evacuated. Peter is the eldest, then Susan, then Edmund, and Lucy is the youngest.
On a normal day when the kids were playing hide-and-seek, Lucy hid in a wardrobe and found it magical; it connects to another world. In the magic world where every single leaf was covered by snow, Lucy met a faun called Tumnus. He invited her to come to his little log cabin for a hot tea, and told her that where she came is called Narnia, where was ruled by the white witch; In Narnia, animals can talk and think like human, for example he himself. It really shocked Lucy for a while, and then she found it very interesting to be in here and make new friends like Tumnus. After the tea, Tumnus confessed that bringing her to his house without noticing the white witch was going against her intention, and he might be caught because of that. He then sent Lucy back and told her not to come back.
Lucy returned back to her real life and told the story to her siblings, but unfortunately no one believed her. They tried to go through the wardrobe but failed, and thought Lucy was a liar. At the next time when they were playing hide and seek, Edmund followed her to Narnia. He met the white witch accidentally; after knowing that Edmund has three siblings, the witch, who called herself the “Queen” promised him to make him heir only if he brought his siblings to her castle. After he returning, he then realized that the Queen was the witch in Lucy’s story. Very soon, the four kids went through the back panel of the wardrobe and arrived Narnia. When Lucy led them to Tumnus’s house, she saw a note of the witch noticing that he was arrested for bringing human to Narnia.
They met the Beavers, and they told the kids that there’s a prophecy that when two daughters of Eve and two sons of Adam had arrived and met Aslan the great lion and the rightful king, then the witch’s magic would collapse. Edmund betrayed them when they were looking for Aslan, and sneaked to the witch’s castle. He told the witch that Aslan might return, which made her very furious. Meanwhile, the Santa Claus had given the other three kids their magical gifts. Aslan rescued Edmund from the witch, and the four kids reunited. Aslan died for trading his life with Edmund’s, for saving him from the petrifaction state. After the witch acknowledging Aslan’s death, she started the war immediately. Aslan came alive because of Lucy and Susan crying over his body, and told them the weakness of the witch. The kids then won the battle and became Kings and Queens of Narnia; they had also established a deep friendship with Aslan the lion. The magic of the witch collapsed, and all the Narnians loved their new rulers. One day while the kids were riding horses in the forest, they came back to the place where the wardrobe is. They fell through the back panel; their gorgeous clothes disappeared, as well as their crown. Only a few second had passed in their original world.

Because of the experiences in Narnia, the four kids in Pevensie family grew from cowardly immature kids to someone who can take care of theirselves and have great leaderships. Especially for Edmund; before he met Aslan, the only things he cared were attention from others and benefits for himself; after he was saved, he realized his personal value, and the importance of friendship.
